For Immediate Release:
GENERATION HOPE ANNOUNCES NATIONAL AND STATE POLICY AND ADVOCACY AGENDA ALONGSIDE INAUGURAL STUDENT PARENT ADVOCACY ALLIANCE
WASHINGTON ⸺ February 14, 2024 ⸺ Generation Hope, an organization dedicated to ensuring all student parents have the opportunities to succeed, announced today its 2024 National and State Policy and Advocacy Agenda in tandem with the launch of its very first Student Parent Advocacy Alliance. Throughout the six-month program, the organization will collaborate with student parent voices to enhance their advocacy skills and develop a comprehensive annual policy agenda to serve student parents at state and national levels.
“Each year, Generation Hope identifies opportunities at the state and national level to accelerate economic mobility for families, and we are looking forward to doing this work in 2024,” said Nicole Lynn Lewis, Founder and CEO of Generation Hope. “For the first time, we are ecstatic to welcome the inaugural cohort of our Student Parent Advocacy Alliance to bolster these efforts. Student parents are some of the fiercest advocates for resources and policies that foster equity in educational spaces. This alliance was created to center their expertise and lived experiences, and we’re thrilled to expand our advocacy efforts alongside student parents.”
The Student Parent Advocacy Alliance was established based on the belief that every student parent should have access to resources, support, and a community that understands the intricacies of their experiences. This foundation acknowledges the vital role of advocacy in ensuring equitable opportunities for all student parents and empowers student parents to acquire new advocacy, leadership and storytelling skills to champion national and state policy changes that benefit student parents and their families.
Each member brings a unique perspective, powerful story and commitment to creating supportive environments for student parents to the Alliance. The 2024 Student Parent Advocacy Alliance members are:
Alana Griffin - University of Pittsburgh
Malajah Lopez - University of New Orleans
Juliana Loza-Espinoza - George Washington University
Jenelle Lovelette - Santa Fe Community College
Lorraine Oyetubo - Trinity Washington University
Krystle Pale - University of California, Santa Cruz
Tamara Sahin - Montgomery College
Isabel Torres - Austin Community College
Darin Wellons - Madison Area Technical College
Each year, Generation Hope creates an annual National and State Policy and Advocacy Agenda to accompany their overarching policy priorities curated from student parents’ lived experiences, research, and direct work with families. The 2024 Agenda builds on the organization’s commitment to partnering with student parents and policy leaders to champion inclusive higher education spaces, access to quality childcare, and opportunities for economic mobility.
